The advanced manufacturing technologies sector is one of the most dynamic and strategic in the Basque Country, and most of the Spanish business fabric in this sector is located in the Basque Country. The companies’ turnover exceeds €1.7 billion (over 50% of the turnover for Spain as a whole) and around 7,500 professionals are employed.
The more than 450 Basque companies include manufacturers of components, accessories and tools for machine tooling, suppliers for the automation of industrial manufacturing and producers of any type of machine tool. The sector is noted for being an integrated industry, the use of advanced technologies, such as automation, robotics, additive manufacturing (3D printing), cybersecurity and industrial digitalisation and their presence in all the sectors of the business landscape, along with historical knowledge of the sector due to its long presence in the territory.

The Basque Country has created a robust ecosystem that includes technology centres, universities and industrial clusters. It is with good reason that AFM, the Spanish Association of Machine Tool Manufacturers, has its headquarters in Donostia-San Sebastián; its members work together to develop and implement innovative solutions to make the manufacturing industry more competitive.
Advance manufacturing not only improves the efficiency and quality of the products, but if also allows greater flexibility and customisation in production. Public policies and programmes to support innovation in the Basque Country have been key to drive the adoption of these technologies. Thanks to Industry 4.0 projects and the integration of digital technologies in production, Basque companies have established themselves as leaders in the field of advanced manufacturing worldwide, improving their ability to compete on international markets.
