The automotive sector in the Basque Country is one of the cornerstones of its economy, accounting for just over 25% of industrial production and employing around 40,000 people. The Basque automotive industry is noted for the presence of over 300 auxiliary and component companies, which supply the main international and national vehicle manufacturers; it produces over 50% of the automotive components manufactured in Spain and 90% of its production is exported.
The Basque companies in the sector have 345 production plants in 32 countries, which employ over 120,000 people.

The value chain of the Basque automotive industry is highly specialised and diversified, ranging from parts and components to complete systems and advanced technology for vehicles. From that position, showing great flexibility and customer focus, the Basque automotive sector is making a considerable effort to adapt to the new products and technologies arising from the emergence of electric vehicles.
Furthermore, the sector is benefitting from a favourable setting for business development, and boasts centres such as the Automotive Intelligence Center (AIC) and associations, including the Basque Automotive Cluster (ACICAE), which foster innovation, cooperation and internationalisation.
The automotive ecosystem in the Basque Country is driven by the strong partnership among industry, technology centres and universities. This synergy has led to progress in areas such as advanced manufacturing, automation and digitalisation of processes. In particular, the transition towards sustainable mobility and the development of smart and electric vehicles are key priorities, with numerous initiatives underway to lead those technological changes.
