The biosciences and health sector in the Basque Country has shown remarkable development in recent years, and has become a strategic area for the region, with over 200 companies and 8,000 employees. This sector includes a wide range of activities; special mention should be made of companies manufacturing medical devices (28%) and biotechnological and biomedical research (22%), but there are also companies working on digital health (15), in vitro diagnostics (9%), pharmaceutical industry (4%) and healthcare and its related services. Basque companies in this field are noted for being highly specialised and their ability to innovate; they work closely with research centres, technology centres and universities to develop new therapies, medical technologies and personalised health solutions.

Institutional support and public policies have been crucial for the grown of the biosciences and health sector in the Basque Country. Initiatives such as the Basque Health Cluster and other R&D&I promotion programmes have facilitated the development of a collaborative and dynamic ecosystem.
