Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) has signed a contract with US power giant AES Corp (NYSE:AES) for the supply of turbines for the 312-MW Tucano wind project in Brazil.
With this order, Siemens Gamesa’s 5.X platform, the manufacturer’s latest generation of onshore turbines, is set to make a debut in the Brazilian market. The company will supply 52 units of the SG 5.8-170 model, one of two 5.X variants, Siemens Gamesa has said.
The Tucano wind farm will be located in the state of Bahia. Its commissioning is planned for 2021.
Siemens Gamesa will manufacture the turbines locally at its nacelle assembly plant in Camacari. The facility, which has recently been expanded to produce converters, will be upgraded for this purpose.
AES is Siemens Gamesa’s third customer ordering turbines from the 5.X platform. Both 5.X variants have been previously picked up for two projects in Sweden.
