Colombia’s national mining and energy planning unit UPME has published a preliminary version of terms and conditions that will guide the call for tender for the design, construction, installation and operation of an energy storage system of up to 50 MW.

There is no date set for when the tender will be held, but the storage system is already scheduled to commence operations on June 30, 2022, according to documents published on Monday.

The tender will be open to both national and foreign players who will be able to choose from three alternatives to carry out the project.

The first two alternatives each propose the installation of a 15-MW battery storage system and another one of 35 MW, but all hooked to different substations. The third option is the installation of a 45-MW system connected to one substation and accompanying infrastructure.

The storage system will be installed in the department of Atlantico in northern Colombia.

The preliminary version of the text is open for public feedback until June 19, 2020.
